突然，狄仁杰想起贺大荆那漏酒的酒壶和特殊的味道，当时并未在意，但现在看来却是一个重要的线索。他开始怀疑一切都是有人精心策划的，而这个人正是魏无疾。

The sunset over Chang'an City, the nightfall, the thunder roaring, the rain and mist enveloping. In the palace, intrigues abound, with someone plotting to use the Empress's hand to eliminate their enemies, falsely claiming her order to poison and kill the regional governor of Yangzhou, Chen Zhuliang, leaving his family in ruins. Meanwhile, the ancient Wutong trees are set ablaze, causing a stir. In the current era, the imperial examinations are different from before, with the Empress instituting a new system that does not limit candidates based on their background. Many white-robed scholars flock to the capital with their documents, staying at the inn where Di Renjie has long resided, creating a lively atmosphere. As the imperial exams approach, Di Renjie shows no interest in participating, much to the frustration of his father's old comrade, Hong Liang, who seeks help from the Grand Secretary Wei Wujing to secure a patronage for Di Renjie's future. However, Di Renjie remains adamant about traveling the world and has no desire to enter officialdom.

During a commotion at the inn where they are staying, a group of constables burst in to capture a thief who stole a precious gem. Unable to discern the thief's identity due to disguises, the constables decide to interrogate everyone present. Di Renjie, known for his keen observation skills, eliminates suspects based on their habits and eventually deduces that the culprit is the accountant. The culprit confesses, and the case is solved. Di Renjie takes pity on the deserter, who once served the Tang Dynasty on the frontier, and pleads for clemency on his behalf. Though the leader of the constables does not respond, his actions speak volumes, easing Di Renjie's mind. Grateful for Di Renjie's help, the inn guests show their respect towards him.

Meanwhile, Ma Rong sets up a stall in the streets of Chang'an, using the tree fire incident to attract a crowd and make profits. Qiao Tai intentionally takes a stance opposite to the crowd and successfully cheats them multiple times, only to be exposed as a fraud. As Ma Rong and Qiao Tai flee, a group of men chase after a scholar, who turns out to be Di Renjie's close friend He Dajing. Di Renjie steps in to rescue his friend from trouble, using his martial skills against the pursuers and eventually getting caught and thrown into jail. Fortunately, their mentor Wei Wujing arrives to bail them out and advises Di Renjie to reconsider participating in the imperial exams. Back at the inn, Hong Liang warns Ma Rong and Qiao Tai to be cautious in Chang'an and refrain from discussing palace matters. However, the two men break into Di Renjie's abandoned mansion, curious about his background.

At this moment, Di Renjie is still unsure about taking the imperial exams. Hong Liang, following Ma Rong's example, sets up a chessboard to help him make a decision. Despite claiming to be the master of his own destiny, Di Renjie feels a tug at his heart when he sees a board filled with white pieces. Ultimately, he decides to join the exam with the other scholars.

After the exams, the scholars revel in their newfound freedom, eager to celebrate by the lake and enjoy the festival atmosphere. He Dajing takes Di Renjie to a tavern, only to find it reserved by General Changsun, forbidding entry to anyone else. Enchanted by a familiar tune, Di Renjie follows the sound to the Jushui Pavilion, where the owner reluctantly lets them in but claims to be closed for the night. Undeterred, He Dajing insists on staying for a drink with Di Renjie, who learns from him that Wei Wujing is compiling a new genealogy record at the Empress's behest, signaling a potential upheaval in the noble families. As the night wears on, He Dajing becomes increasingly intoxicated, and Di Renjie, feeling the effects of alcohol, sees the owner sneaking into a hidden room to hide his sister, warning her to stay hidden from the Imperial Guards.

While searching for the dressing room, Di Renjie unexpectedly discovers a secret door but is quickly ushered out by the owner. As a thunderstorm rages outside, a fire breaks out at the Jushui Pavilion, and Di Renjie witnesses He Dajing perish in the flames, sobering him up instantly.
